Farm Journal Friday is Back!
Well hi there stranger!
It’s been a minute (how has it been 6 months since I last shared with you all?!) and I can’t quite grasp how time has flown so fast! Last time I posted I was busy prepping turkey dinner for Thanksgiving and nowadays I’m busy feeding baby turkeys-how’s that for full circle?
On the farm, we have long since awoken from our winter hibernation and ever since the snow began to melt, we have been tirelessly preparing for the season ahead. I’m quickly learning that regardless of the year or what else is going on in our lives, spring time on a farm is like being woken up from a nice long, cozy nap with a bucket of ice cold water dumped overhead: ultimately, it’s a tad unpleasant, very much jarring, and a big kick in the tushy to get a move on- you have no choice but to throw the covers off and kick it into gear.
As the spring whirlwind has overtaken our lives, which is honestly quite a fitting description on many levels (anyone else experiencing a crazy windy spring?) we have slowly found our groove. Unfortunately, my best intentions to sit down and write to you all earlier this spring were like dust in the wind once the workload hit. But, I did it. I’m finally here! I’ve genuinely missed sitting down each week to reminisce on farm life and I am so happy to be here again for Farm Journal Friday!
Oh my, so where to begin?!
So much has happened since the snow melted in April and we were finally able to get out into the fields. We juggled our first lambing season with a new caterpillar tunnel build, expanded our outside garden and fenced it, built chicken tractors and took care of baby chicks (the post office now has us on speed-dial for chick pick-up). All that combined with our everyday chores and daily life for me as a mom, wife, and human being has left very little time for much else. At times it felt like I was treading water caught in a rip current, but now that lambing is over, seeds and plants are (mostly) in the ground and we have a new handle on our spring schedule (and absolutely amazing friends who are volunteering on the farm this spring and summer), I finally have a chance to catch my breath, to take everything in and sit down to reflect. Sometimes a “picture is worth a thousand words”, and I think the best way to catch you up on farm life this spring is to share some pictures with you.
Here’s what farm life has looked like over the past few months:
I believe that saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words” is quite accurate here. We’ve been busy this spring babying, caretaking, prepping, building, seeding, planting, and (in rare moments of quiet) sharing time with friends and having some fun. The friendly faces you saw above (Chereen with the lamb and Kade) and Mers (expertly feeding 2 lambs at once) are dear friends and helping out at the farm this year. We feel so lucky to have such amazing people in our lives because this farm stuff truly takes a village.
As we get back into the swing of things with the farm journal this summer, I look forward to sharing with you all the journey of farm life, news on our CSA, and so much more. For those local to Routt County, we currently have eggs and spring vegetables available for purchase at the Community Agriculture Alliance market on 8th and Oak St. in downtown Steamboat (as well as on the online market, www.caamarket.org). We are also currently taking reservations for whole animal sales (click here), so be sure to check that out if interested as we have limited availability. Additionally, we hope to offer farm tours later this summer to those interested in seeing our small diversified farm. I’ll keep you posted!
As always, thank you for supporting us and for following along on the journey. We love sharing the journey with you.
Until next time,
Farmer Kinzie
