Spring Has Sprung!
It’s official, spring has finally sprung at the farmstead! The fields are mostly melted out and the creeks are raging full, the grass is beginning to pop, and the trees are budding, too! After what felt like a never-ending winter, we are like moths to a flame, frolicking outside any chance we get. I have to admit, it kind of feels weird to throw on a pair of flip-flops and dash out the door. It’s been so long since I was able to do that and it feels SO good to get out into the warm sun again. We are all overjoyed to be out and about again and boy, do we have a lot to do!
This winter was so harsh and much of our infrastructure was damaged due to the heavy snow. We have miles and miles of fences to mend, a large clean-up for our collapsed cat tunnel, and so much more to get done. We are happy to get back out there- though I’ll admit the long winter results in some sore farmers as we get back into farm shape or “farm fit” as we like to joke around the farm.
Even with all of the tasks piling on this time of year, just being back out there is beyond rejuvenating. It also helps that we are deep into lambing and have the sweetest little lambs running around the farm. Mamas and babies are all doing well!
We hope to get them all back on grass in the next couple of weeks. Until then everyone is staying safe and tucked into our livestock corral. In addition to our lambs, we also have goat kids on the farm for the first time this year- they are just the sweetest! Super friendly and love to say hi and get rubs from Kade.
We also had one of our mama cows give birth to her first calf about a month ago. She is a heifer calf and super sweet. We are still working on a name, although I think Kade wanted to name her Sweetheart, too! Maybe we will have Ferdinand “Sweetheart” and Sweetheart this year.
We are so looking forward to the season ahead and the many adventures we will no doubt go on this year. Happy Spring to you and yours!
