The Four Little Pigs
We had another very exciting week at Mystic Hills Farmstead. We got pigs. And yes, they are adorable!
See?! I love them. So much. I forgot how much I love pigs until they found their way back into my life. I had a lot of experience caring for pigs at the farm I started out on back in 2016, but over the years I forgot just how much I adore their spunky personalities. They add such a positive, upbeat vibe around the farm.
Jack and I had talked about getting pigs for years before we finally took the plunge. Just last night we were reminiscing about life and he swears we talked about getting pigs within the first few months we were dating (back in 2013). I can’t say I remember the exact conversation, but it is safe to say that it has been at least 7 years in the making. And it feels so good that it is finally a reality! The farm just feels more complete with them here.
Now, you may have noticed that the picture of those adorable pigs shows only 3 little pigs, not 4 as the title clearly states. That’s because the 4th pig we bought is a very special pig. Her name is Princess (yes, really) and she was the farmer’s “house pig”. And yes, she lived inside of their house and was treated as part of the family. I was initially a little upset at Jack for purchasing a pig that was basically a pet and so friendly to people because these pigs were supposed to be for meat purposes only. But, just as you probably predicted, Princess has melted both of our hearts. She is so spunky, curious, and very friendly around people. Because of this we are making plans to keep her as a breeding pig. She will become a full-time resident on the farm and will be bred for piglets once a year.
While it was not in our initial plan to keep a pig for breeding, sometimes things happen for a reason and I think that in the long run we will be very happy to have her on the farm year-round. I already enjoy spending special time with her all day and if you can’t find me on the farm right now, it’s because I am hanging out with my new best friend.
See you next week!
